DARREN BARBER

Founder and personal trainer

Darren set up Barber's Gym after many years in the fitness industry working in commercial and corporate gyms, and training clients independently from local parks in the East London area. Wanting to focus on a project of his own Barber's Gym was born in 2012, and with it Darren's fitness philosophies and ethos came to fruition without compromise. Training with purpose to get real life improvements for everyday and specific sporting achievement. Functional strength and conditioning needed to not only increase performance, improve health and wellness but also challenge your mindset.

Darren qualified with a degree in Sport Rehabilitation and Sport Science back in 2003 and from then has amassed a wealth of experience and knowledge in fitness programming, strength and conditioning exercise techniques including kettlebell training, power lifting and olympic weightlifting. He has attained his certifications through multiple sporting bodies and most recently completed training with GYM JONES.

Sport has always played a significant part in Darren's lifestyle having played rugby throughout his formative years, giving way to more extreme sports in the way of snowboarding and competing at national level in cable wakeboarding. An avid climber he is now focusing again on the big outdoors and uses the gym as his platform to take bigger steps into the mountains.

Personal Trainer / Endurance specialist  

Emily Ackner is a level 3 personal trainer and piece of the Barber’s Gym furniture. An outdoors enthusiast, surfer, mountain lover and trail runner, Emily’s coaching focusses on developing strength and fitness for an adventurous life outside the gym whilst enjoying your time in it. Always up for a good challenge, she's completed multiple marathons, open water swims and recently solo run the 300 mile Cornish coastal path in 12 consecutive days. Success comes in the form of grit, graft and a smile.

Personal Trainer / Calisthenics specialist 

Henry specialises in Calisthenics and Street Workout, starting his career as a professional extreme sports athlete Henry has carried over his passion for freestyle sports and a love for having fun whilst being active. Henry’s focus is to create engaging and stimulating sessions that enhance the bodies functionality and strength using bodyweight exercise. If you want to learn a specific skill such as the muscle up or handstand, if you have a specific health goal, or if you just want to get moving and see what your body is capable of, Henry will apply a unique and fun edge to your training programme. Henry is a level 3 personal trainer and is also a certified calisthenics coach.

For Katherine the adventure happens at Barber's. 

After having to leave competitive rowing behind at the boat house, she brought her focus and energy back to the safe and structured environment of the gym, where Strength and Conditioning became her ‘sport’.

With a Level 3 Personal Training Diploma, certificates in Suspension fitness, High Intensity training  and a specialisation in using lifting to build, sculpt, and shed body fat, she brings with her a love of these 4 walls and all the heavy things within it.

Personal Trainer

Matt is fascinated by all things fitness. He grew up living above a garage Gym, lifting and boxing from the age of 12. He has a passion for form, as it has been his undoing in the past, and wants to help people to find themselves in the gym.

"In form we find comfort."

Very much in tune with Barbers gym ethos, it all has to be for a reason. What is the Goal? What is the point? From a holistic standpoint, his beliefs are that you need to be ready for the outdoor world and everything it can throw at you. It can be as simple or difficult as you want it to be.

Matt is an advanced level 3 trainer with a background in powerlifting, boxing and metabolic conditioning.

Reggie, the Hound of Barber's Gym. He likes to pop his head in the Gym a couple of times a day to make sure everyone is putting in there best efforts. When he's not out and about socialising or lounging on the sheepskin at home, you can catch him on The Down's playing ball and doing his daily workout.
